The 'duck curve' is solar energy's greatest challenge
Renewables require change in the energy supply chain.

Electricity is incredibly difficult to store, so grid operators have to generate it at the exact moment it is demanded. In order to do this, they create incredibly accurate models of the total electric loads, that is how much energy will be consumed on a given day. But as utilities started to produce more energy from renewable sources like solar, the models started to shift as well.
California researchers discovered a peculiarity in their state’s electric load curves, that started to look more and more like a duck. And that duck shaped chart highlights the greatest challenge to solar energy growth in the US.

How solar energy got so cheap, and why it's not everywhere (yet)
A lot speaks for solar energy. It's clean, renewable – and now even cheaper than energy from fossil fuels like coal or natural gas. Sounds pretty great, right? But it only makes up a tiny bit of global electricity production. Why don't we use a lot more of it yet?
We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

The Dark Side of Solar and Wind Power
Have you ever pondered on the sustainability of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power? This question transcends mere contemplation; it's a pressing concern in our evolving energy landscape. As we increasingly turn to these sources to meet our energy needs, understanding their intricacies becomes paramount.
Renewable energy, with its emphasis on sources like wind and solar power, undeniably offers substantial environmental benefits. However, beneath this green exterior lies a significant drawback – volatility. The inherent nature of these sources introduces fluctuations in energy production, posing a formidable challenge for a reliable energy supply.
Picture this scenario: one day, the wind is robust, and wind turbines are tirelessly spinning at full capacity, generating ampl...

Since 2009, the price of solar energy has come down by 90 percent. That’s no accident. It’s the result of policy interventions from the US to Germany to China.
As policy analyst Gregory Nemet puts it, “No one country is responsible. It was a relay race rather than a competition.” The global flow of knowledge, people, technology, and policy helped bring down the price per watt from more than $100 in 1976 to less than $0.50 today, according to this analysis from the folks at Our World in Data. https://ourworldindata.org/cheap-renewables-growth
If we can learn the right lessons from solar’s success, it could help us develop and deploy the technology we need to keep our planet habitable and avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

Imagine creating solar panels without relying on materials in short supply and adopting an eco-friendlier production process. And at the same time boosting efficiency? Enter perovskite tandem solar cells—an innovation that has long held the promise of revolutionizing the solar energy landscape. But where are they in their development, and could they truly represent the future of solar panel technology?

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Picture this scenario: one day, the wind is robust, and wind turbines are tirelessly spinning at full capacity, generating ample energy. The following day, however, the wind dwindles, leading to a substantial drop in energy production. Similarly, solar power's efficacy hinges on the intensity of sunlight, a variable that fluctuates throughout the day and across seasons.
While the benefits of renewable energies are evident, their inconsistency demands careful consideration. This unpredictability introduces a level of complexity to the energy grid, impacting its stability and reliability. The challenge lies in finding solutions to store excess energy during peak production periods and release it when these renewable sources are less active.
In this exploration of renewable energy sustainability, we delve into the nuances of balancing environmental consciousness with the need for a steady energy supply. Join us on this journey as we navigate through the challenges and seek innovative solutions to ensure a greener and more reliable energy future.
Let's harness the power of knowledge and technology to make renewable energy a consistently viable and sustainable force for a cleaner planet. 🌍⚡
